Kosovo and Albania authorities during a coordinated operation Friday have arrested dozens of officers suspected of misuse of official duty and receiving bribe. Gazeta Express has learned that about 60 police and customs officers have been arrested on both sides of the border.

The Police Inspectorate of Kosovo and Special Prosecution of the Republic of Kosovo (SPRK) launched Friday morning an operation at the Vermice border point with Albania. The operation from the Kosovo side of the border ended with 26 officers arrested, including two sergeants. The Police Inspectorate has also recommended their suspension. The Police and SPRK in a joint press release stated that today’s operation came following a one-year investigation involving cover investigative measures. Today’s operation was continuation of last months action code named Pika 1 where 50 police and customs officers were arrested. They were suspected of receiving bribe.

Today’s operation was coordinated with Albanian authorities who on their side of the border arrested dozens of officers working at the Vercime crossing. According to the Albania’s Special Prosecution Against Corruption and Organised Crime (SPAK) 32 police officers have been arrested during Today’s operation. Among the arrested is also Director of the Director of Border and Migration in Kukes. They are suspected of allowing smuggling of goods and helped people facing legal problem cross the border. Of the arrested persons on the Albanian side of the border 17 have been detained, whereas three others have been suspended from work. /GazetaExpress/
