Kosovo started Saturday its three days of commemorations for KLA commander Adem Jashari that marked the beginning of armed resistance against Serbian forces in the 1998-99 war in Kosovo.

On 5 March 1998, Serbian security forces attacked Adem Jashari’s family the leading figure of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). After a three-day battle Adem Jashari, a founding member of the KLA, and more than 50 members of his extended family were killed.

Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani, attending the main ceremony held at the Kosovo Security Force (KSF) barracks near Pristina asked for justice for all war crimes committed in Kosovo. Osmani said that March 1998 marks a turning point in Kosovo’s struggle for freedom. She said that the sacrifice of the Jashari family in Prekaz was a call for mobilization of all the nation to end slavery and send message that freedom has a price.

Osmani in her speech has mentioned Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and reiterated that Kosovo’s membership in NATO is necessary to maintain peace in the region. “Membership in NATO remains our strategic objective therefore membership is necessary more than ever and a precondition for peace in the region,” Osmani said.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti said that the sacrifice act of the Jashari’s family was exemplary for the world and now with Russia’s aggression in Ukraine is more than clear that value and importance of the KLA resistance. /GazetaExpress/
