Freedom House “Nations in Transit” Report: Kosovo stuck in the gray zone

Freedom House’s latest report “Nations in Transit 2022” published Wednesday ranks Kosovo among the countries with the hybrid regime/transitional democracy.

Countries are rated on a scale of 1 to 7, with 1 representing the lowest and 7 the highest level of democratic progress. In this year’s report Kosovo marked a progress from 3.14 point in previous year to 3.25 that falls into the category of the transitional or Hybrid Regimes (3.01-4.00). Countries receiving this score are typically electoral democracies where democratic institutions are fragile,

and substantial challenges to the protection of political rights and civil liberties exist, it is written in the report.

According to Freedom House Kosovo has marked progress in the National Democratic Governance increasing its score from 2.50 percent in last year’s report to 3.00 in 2022. Kosovo has improved its score also in the Judicial Framework and Independence to 2.75 comparing with 2.50 last year, whereas other categories such as electoral process, civil society, independent media, corruption, democracy score remain the same as previous year.

The report shows that the situation has deteriorated in Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina, whereas situation in Montenegro and North Macedonia, the situation remains unchanged as in last year’s report. /GazetaExpress/
