Construction of Kosovo-Serbia “Peace Highway” starts next year, Minister says

Kosovo’s minister of Infrastructure, Arban Abrashi, says construction of the ‘Peace Highway’ connecting Kosovo and Serbia, will start next year. Building of the highway is part of the US-brokered economic normalization agreement signed in Washington on 4 September by Kosovo prime minister Avdullah Hoti and Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic.

Minister Abrashi said Tuesday that they have already applied with the European Bank for reconstruction and Development (EBRD) for financing of this project. “We have already applied in the EBRD for financing this project, and we are working on drafting of a feasibility study for Pristina-Durres and Pristina-Merdare railway,” Abrashi said. 

The EBRD in a statement in November confirmed financing the Serbian section of the highway thanks to a loan of up to €85 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The loan will finance the construction of a 39-km section between the cities Nis and Plocnik in the south of Serbia. The highway will connect Nis with Kosovo’s capital Pristina, continue to Albania’s capital Tirana and end in Durres on the Adriatic Sea. /GazetaExpress/
