Albania’s acting foreign minister, Gent Cakaj, offered his resignation Tuesday, Gazeta Express reports.

In a public letter Cakaj thanked prime minister Edi Rama for the cooperation without revealing the reasons of his resignation and whether he will continue his political engagement.

“I would like to inform you that today, 29 December 2020, I have offered my irrevocable resignation with immediate effect to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Albania, Mr. Edi Rama. After successful  finishing of the OSCE’s Presidency, opening of membership negotiation with the EU, and extraordinary work to grant a seat in  the UN Security Council in  2022-2023, implementation of exemplary measures for raising of the Albanian factor in the Western Balkans, and considering that Albania is nearing the election campaign, when I have no ambitions to be involved as candidate for member of parliament, I consider that the chapter of my service as head of the Albanian diplomacy has come to an end,” Cakaj said.

Cakaj, who was born in Kosovo, and joined the Albanian Government thanked Prime Minister Rama for his close cooperation in what he called “not so easy” circumstances for Albania. /GazetaExpress/
