Coronavirus restrictions reimposed in Kosovo after highest number of deaths

Kosovo has reimposed tougher coronavirus restrictions to prevent further spread of COVID-19. The prime minister, Avdullah Hoti, said on Sunday that steps are necessary after number of virus-related deaths rose by 10 in a day, the highest since the first case was confirmed in Kosovo in early March. Today’s deaths bring country’s death toll to 70.

The Government has decided to reintroduce restriction movement measures in some municipalities, including capital Pristina after surge of cases over the last few days. “We have prepared an action plan which will enter into force as of today. There will be restriction of movement from 21:00 to 05:00 in municipalities with the most confirmed cases including Pristina, Prizren, Ferizaj and Vushtrri,” Hoti said. According to Prime Minister the measures will enter into force after a Government meeting late on Sunday.  

Hoti said that they have decided to increase capacities with additional beds and equipment by completely reorganizing the University Clinical Centre of Kosovo and will ask help of private hospitals. The Government also promised buying of new equipment and test kits to prevent further spread of the virus.

Hoti also said the Government has proposed closure of all cafeteria from 21:00 to 05:00, during this time the restaurants and cafeteria will be allowed to serve only in open areas and takeaway service.

Regardless high number of confirmed cases and COVID-19 related deaths minister of health said that Kosovo has potential to cope with the virus. “No place for hysteric reactions, especially by political bodyguards who are trying to harm our work and obstruct the work of doctors,” Zemaj said among other things.

On Sunday at the Pristina hospital died five patients, whereas on Saturday were registered five other deaths. On Saturday health authorities confirmed 178 new coronavirus cases, bringing country’s total over 3.000. /GazetaExpress/
