Kosovo Wartime Rape Survivor files a criminal complaint at the Special Prosecution
The survivor of sexual violence
during the Kosovo War, Shyhrete Tahiri Sylejmani, has filed a criminal
complaint at the Special Prosecution of the Republic of Kosovo, asking for
justice be delivered in her case.
“Today, I am here with you to share
the pain in my soul. I represent all mothers, brothers and daughters who feel the
same pain. It is not easy. I am here to seek for justice be delivered,” she
said addressing media as she was heading to submit the criminal complaint at
the Special Prosecution.
Director of the Kosovo
Rehabilitation Centre for Torture Victims (KRCT), Feride Rushiti, said that 20
years after the war in Kosovo, no one has been convicted of sexual violence
charges. She called on Kosovo institutions to prioritise dealing with these
cases. Shyhrete Tahiri is from Gjilan and she is the second survivor of sexual
violence during the war after Vasfije Krasniqi Goodman to go out publically and
seek for her rapists be convicted. According to unofficial data there are more
than 20 thousand victims of sexual violence during the war in Kosovo.
