Kosovo President announces extraordinary mayoral elections in Mitrovica North, Podujeva

Kosovo President Hashim Thaci announced extraordinary mayoral elections in Mitrovica North and Podujeva, after former mayors stepped down to join the Government.

The President’s Office in a statement said that early mayoral elections will be held on 29 November 2020. According to the press release the President has instructed the Central Elections Commission (CEC) to take all necessary actions on organising and holding mayoral elections in the Municipality of Podujeva and Municipality of Mitrovica North in accordance with the applicable laws. Thaci warned in his statement that the CEC should organise the elections in coordination with other relevant institutions and in accordance with the Law on Prevention and Fighting of COVID-19 Pandemic.

Former mayor of Mitrovica North, Goran Rakic, has resigned in June to join Avdullah Hoti’s Government as deputy prime minister and Minister of Local Government Administration. Rakic is chairman of the Srpska List, a political entity representing Kosovo Serbs in Government. Mayor of Podujeva Agim Veliu, who is member of the LDK, has also stepped down to become minister of Internal Affairs in the LDK-led Government. /GazetaExpress/
