Kosovo PM Hoti announces a meeting of political parties to discuss election of new president

Kosovo prime minister, Avdullah Hoti, said that a meeting of all political parties will take place soon to see if there is willingness to elect new country’s president.

“Soon we will organise a roundtable of political parties to see their mood on election of the new president,” Hoti told media on Thursday.

Former Kosovo president Hashim Thaci resigned on 5 November after the Kosovo Specialist Chambers confirmed an indictment against him charging Thaci of war crimes for his role as senior member of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) during 1998-1999 war with Serbia. Currently his duties are assumed by Speaker of Parliament, Vjosa Osmani, who is serving as acting president. According to the Constitution the Speaker has six months to exercise this duty until the Parliament elects new head of state. Political parties are disagreeing on who should be elected the president. Ruling coalition partners lack majority to elect the new president and they have to rely on opposition votes.

So far leader of the junior partner, AAK, in the LDK-led government, Ramush Haradinaj, has declared his candidacy for president, but the LDK is against. The opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) also says that if the ruling coalition is dependent on their votes, they should get the president’s post. PM Hoti said that each party has its position therefore he will ask them all sit on the roundtable and discuss the modalities. /GazetaExpress/
