The sequel has the working title “Social Network II”…
15 years after the premiere of the film “The Social Network,” a sequel has been announced that will tackle new chapters in the history of one of the most influential social networks today. Although the original 2010 film was directed by David Fincher, the new part is being directed by Aaron Sorkin, the screenwriter of the first part and winner of the Oscar.
Unlike the previous film, which was inspired by the book "Accidental Billionaires", the sequel has the working title "The Social Network II" and is based on a series of investigative articles called "The Facebook Files", published in 2021 by the Wall Street Journal.
These texts expose the internal problems of Meta (formerly Facebook), including the negative effects of algorithms, the spread of misinformation, and the conflict between profit and ethics.
The sequel is being produced by Sony Pictures, with Todd Black, Peter Rice, Stuart Besser and Sorkin himself among the producers. The cast has not yet been confirmed and it remains unknown whether Jesse Eisenberg will reprise his role as Mark Zuckerberg.
The first film was a huge success, grossing $226 million worldwide and winning three Oscars, including Best Adapted Screenplay. In addition to Eisenberg, the film also starred Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake and Rooney Mara.
Interestingly, Sorkin talked about a possible sequel in 2021, noting at the time that he would only shoot it if Fincher agreed to direct. However, he has since changed his mind and has already begun writing the script. The new film is still in the early stages of development, but given the current theme and the success of the previous one, expectations are high.
