The new medical drama series The Pitt has become a television phenomenon in the US. Praised for its realism and winner of several awards, it is being considered the great comeback of hospital dramas – a genre once dominated by series like ER.

After its great success in America, the series will now be broadcast in Britain through the HBO Max platform.

A hospital that looks completely real

The events take place in an emergency room in Pittsburgh, called the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center (PTMC). Although it looks like a real hospital, it is actually a film set built at Warner Bros. studios in California.

Every detail is designed to be as realistic as possible: drawers are filled with medical equipment, medicine bottles are individually labeled, and hallways are full of patient beds, just like in a real emergency room.

Actor Patrick Ball, who plays doctor Frank Langdon, says that authenticity is the team's top priority: every action and every procedure they try to achieve is as close to reality as possible.

The story of a single shift in the emergency room

The concept of the series is unique: each season takes place during a single work shift in the emergency room, while each episode represents an hour in real time.

The series follows an entire team of hospital workers – doctors, nurses, social workers, security guards and administrative staff – who face serious situations every day: gunshot wounds, drug overdoses, aggressive patients and extreme fatigue of healthcare personnel.

At the center of the story is doctor Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, played by Noah Wyle, previously known for his role in the series ER.

Realism that has convinced even doctors

The series has been praised for its accuracy. The team of writers and consultants includes several emergency room doctors and many nurses who help create the scenes.

Executive producer John Wells says the story was built by listening to the real experiences of healthcare professionals: their concerns, fears and the pressure of their daily work.

Even the character of nurse Dana Evans, played by Katherine LaNasa, faces tough situations in the series, such as aggressive patients who must be physically neutralized.

Overview of the real problems of the healthcare system

In addition to the human drama, The Pitt also addresses major social problems in the US: the high cost of healthcare, the lack of medical insurance, the trauma left by the COVID-19 pandemic, and tensions between patients and medical personnel.

However, the creators of the series emphasize that the goal is not to play politics, but to show the reality of a hospital emergency.

According to Wyle, the series aims to show something very simple: even in a difficult and often chaotic system, many people continue to work every day because they want to help others.

An unexpected success

Thanks to its fast pace and intense realism, the series has become one of the biggest television hits of recent years. Many viewers have even started online challenges to watch the entire 15-episode season in one day – as if they were experiencing a long shift in the emergency room.

The first season of The Pitt begins streaming on March 26 on HBO Max, while episodes of the second season will be released weekly. /GazetaExpress/
