A group of scientists in Israel have decided to prove that headphones can be used to eavesdrop on people.
According to the portal on technology Wired, a group of experts from Ben Gurion University realized that hackers can find a way to enter a computer, make audio recordings, even when the device's microphones are removed or disabled.
To reactivate the microphones in the headphones to use them as microphones, experimental viruses were used, and the scientists performed their experiment by converting air vibrations into electromagnetic signals to capture audio across the room.
"People don't realize that there may be a risk of eavesdropping. Even if you remove the computer's microphone, if you use headphones there is a risk that you will be recorded", says Morderchai Guri who led the research work.
Since RealTek chips are common, such an attack would hypothetically work on any desktop computer, Windows or Mac, as well as laptops.
