Judit Varga, former Justice Minister in Viktor Orban's government and a key political figure in Hungary, has been embroiled in a complicated scandal involving allegations of violence by her ex-husband Peter Magyar and a presidential pardon incident that led to her resignation from politics.
Varga was Minister of Justice from 2019 to 2023 and was the main face of Budapest's defense against the EU's "Sargentini Report".
After their divorce in March 2023, Varga filed a lawsuit against her ex-husband for physical, emotional and psychological abuse during their 16 years of marriage, including when she was pregnant. Magyar denies the allegations and calls them “revenge orchestrated by Orbán.”
In April 2023, Varga countersigned a presidential pardon for a former deputy director of an orphanage involved in covering up cases of child sexual abuse. The scandal became public in early 2024, prompting the resignation of President Katalin Novák and Varga's departure from politics.
Magyar, using this case, accused government officials and the secret service of evidence manipulation and corruption, but Varga later said he was forced to declare what he wanted to save himself./TCh/
