Siljanovska-Davkova: Bilateral issues should not be an obstacle to EU integration

President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova today hosted the participants of the Regional Conference of Austrian Ambassadors from Southeast Europe, which is being held in our country and organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Austria and Ambassador Martin Pammer.

The Austrian delegation was led by Ambassador Elisabeth Kornfeind, Director General for European and Economic Affairs at the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs.

President Siljanovska-Davkova emphasized that the presence of the delegation is evidence of a synchronized and active diplomacy, which is important for the European perspective of the region. She underlined that Austria is not only one of the largest economic investors in the country, but also a strong political friend and a vocal supporter of the European Union enlargement and the European integration process of Macedonia.

The President reaffirmed the position that the EU integration process should be based exclusively on the Copenhagen criteria and merit, emphasizing that bilateral issues should not be used as an instrument to block this process.

The Austrian ambassadors openly expressed support for Macedonia's path towards the European Union, emphasizing that the European perspective of the Western Balkan countries and finding solutions to accelerate integration are the focus of their regional conference. They shared the President's position that cooperation and a regional approach are key to European integration.

It was also assessed that in the current geopolitical context, the enlargement of the European Union is a security imperative. The Austrian representatives called for respect for the rule of law, international agreements and the principle of meritocracy.

The interlocutors expressed readiness to further deepen Macedonian-Austrian relations and to build a common European future.
