Sardine diet: Trend or danger?

A new trend on social media is promoting the so-called “sardine fast” – eating only sardines for three days in a row – as a quick way to lose weight. Proponents claim that the method reduces appetite and speeds up metabolism.

But experts warn that, although sardines are a healthy food, this diet can be unbalanced and potentially dangerous.

How did this trend come about?

The idea was popularized in 2023 by an American doctor and promoter of the keto diet, who suggested that a sardine-only diet for a few days could help break weight loss "plateaus".

This is related to the keto diet, where carbohydrates are restricted to force the body to use fat as an energy source (a process known as ketosis).

Over time, this method spread to "low-carb" communities and then to social networks, where it became a global trend.

Why are sardines considered healthy?

Sardines are:

rich in protein

good source of omega-3 fats (good for the heart)

rich in calcium (especially if consumed with small bones)

Omega-3s have anti-inflammatory properties and can also help gut health.

Where does the problem lie?

Despite the nutritional value, the problem is not the food – but the extreme restriction.

1. Danger from pollutants

Fatty fish can contain heavy metals and pollutants. Excessive consumption over several days in a row can increase exposure to them, especially for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

2. One-sided diet (monodiet)

Consuming only one food means a lack of:

FIBER

various vitamins

antioxidants

food diversity that protects intestinal health

3. Lack of carbohydrates

Removing carbohydrates suddenly can cause:

fatigue

irritability

difficulty concentrating

feeling of weakness

These are normal body reactions, not lack of willpower.

Does it work for weight loss?

There may be rapid weight loss in the short term, but this is often related to water loss and not fat.

Experts emphasize that the claimed benefits are exaggerated, while the risks are real.

The healthiest alternative

Instead of an extreme diet, it is recommended to include sardines in a balanced diet.

For example:

sardines with salad and vegetables

combination with whole grains like brown rice or quinoa

adding legumes for fiber

This way provides energy, satiety and supports overall health.

Sardines are a very healthy food, but consuming them alone for a few days is not a good solution for weight loss.

Extreme diets may yield quick results, but they often come at a cost to your health. A balanced and sustainable approach remains the safest and most effective way. /GazetaExpress/
