Meteorologists predict that the weather will gradually stabilize over the coming days, while temperatures are expected to increase slightly.
Heavy snowfall over the weekend has brought record amounts of snow to some mountainous areas of Switzerland, causing traffic problems and increasing the risk of avalanches in the Alps.
According to meteorological services, more than 100 centimeters of snow have fallen in some alpine regions within 24 hours.
One of the most affected areas is Bosco Gurin in the canton of Ticino, where about 116 centimeters of snow were recorded, one of the largest amounts recorded this winter, albinfo.ch reports.
Significant precipitation has also been reported in the Bernese Oberland, as well as in the cantons of Uri, Valais and Graubünden, where many tourist areas and ski resorts are covered in a thick layer of snow.
As a result of the weather conditions, the risk of avalanches has increased to a high level, while several mountain roads and alpine passes have been temporarily closed for the safety of travelers. Power outages have also been reported in some regions due to the weight of snow on power lines and trees.
Authorities have urged tourists and winter sports enthusiasts to be careful and follow safety guidelines, as avalanches can also occur spontaneously in some mountainous areas.
