Real Madrid have won at least one trophy this season and were crowned European champions again on Monday.

Madrid won the UEFA Youth League final – which is essentially the Champions League for under-19 teams – after beating Club Brugge on penalties after a 1-1 draw on a sunny evening in Switzerland.

Madrid goalkeeper Javier Navarro was crucial in the 4-2 penalty shootout victory, saving shots from Naim Amengai and Tian Koren.

This is the Spanish giants' second title in the 12-year history of this European youth competition, and comes just five days after their elimination in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, where Madrid did not have a single academy player in the starting lineup against Bayern Munich.

Club president Florentino Perez was present on Monday at the stadium of the Swiss club Lausanne-Sport, along with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.

Madrid defender Diego Aguado scored the decisive penalty, beating Brugge goalkeeper Argus Vanden Driessche.

The teams went straight to penalties without extra time.

Madrid took the lead in the 23rd minute, when center forward Jacobo Ortega scored with an elegant right-footed shot near the goal.

Brugge's defense struggled and Madrid had two more chances within 90 seconds to double their lead.

Brugge equalized in the 64th minute, when after a powerful run by Tian Koren and a low cross into the area, the ball was sent into the net by Tobias Lund Jensen./Express newspaper/
