Barcelona haven't had the easiest start to the new season, and the problems have continued with the news that Alejandro Balde has suffered a thigh injury during training.
On Wednesday afternoon, Barcelona confirmed through an official medical report that Balde suffered a "slight" injury to his left thigh during this morning's training session.
"Defender Alejandro Balde suffered a minor injury to his left thigh during today's training. His availability will depend on how he progresses," the statement said.
This is the second thigh injury Balde has suffered in six months, having suffered another in the win over Leganes in April. Both of these came after he tore a muscle in January 2024 against Athletic Club at San Mames.
Barcelona have not given a return date, but according to journalist Helena Condis, the left-back is expected to be out for three weeks. This means he will miss La Liga matches against Valencia, Getafe and possibly Real Oviedo, as well as the first Champions League match of the season against Newcastle United at St James' Park.
Balde's absence coincides with the return of Gerard Martin to the first team, who was signed up to La Liga just before last weekend's draw with Rayo Vallecano. He is expected to start in these games, although teenager Jofre Torrents, who has impressed under Hansi Flick during pre-season, could also get a chance.
While it is not ideal for Barcelona to be without Balde, there is a sense of relief that he is expected to be out for only three weeks. However, the fact that the 21-year-old continues to suffer recurring thigh injuries remains a serious concern, which the medical staff may analyse in the future.
