Obesity is a chronic disease characterized by weight gain. Weight is generally divided into: underweight, normal weight, overweight, obesity grade 1, grade 2 and grade 3 (morbid obesity)! This division is based on BMI (body mass index), which is determined by the weight and height of the person in question!
Obesity is a chronic disease that can lead to numerous consequences such as: diabetes, infertility, high blood pressure, heart disease, spinal cord damage, joint damage, stroke, gallstones, bronchial asthma, varicose veins, various cancers, etc.!
Obesity is very widespread, for example, worldwide there are about 12.5 people with obesity, while in developed countries about 33% are obese, while about 70% are overweight.
The causes of Obesity are:
– Excessive eating with insufficient physical activity
– Hypothyroidism (insufficient production of thyroid hormones)
– Genes
– Cushing's disease
– Insulinoma (insulin-producing tumor)
– PCOS
– etc.
The treatment consists of:
– Lifestyle changes (diet and exercise) – most preferred,
– Treatment of diseases that cause obesity (e.g. hypothyroidism),
– Drinking water (before meals)
– Medications (Orlistat, Qsymia, Contrave, Topiramate, Saxenda, Ozempic, etc.)
– Gastric balloon
– Surgery (Sleeve gastrectomy)
All of the above treatments also have certain conditions that must be met before they can be applied as they have undesirable or even dangerous side effects!
Treatment must be individualized.
Treatment should begin as soon as we become overweight to prevent obesity with its serious health consequences.
Prevention is much easier than treatment, so from now on, let's start changing our lifestyle by doing more sports (or walking) and consuming healthy food to be an example for our children.
