Spain to grant Kosovo visas in Mediterranean Games

The Spanish Olympic Committee has finally agreed to grant visas for members of the Kosovo delegation who will attend the Mediterranean Games Tarragona, after Spanish authorities initially tried to deny visas for Kosovars. Spain is one of the five EU countries which did not recognise Kosovo’s independence.

Catalan broadcaster RAC1 reports that the Government of Spain has sent a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), confirming that they will accept Kosovo athletes attend the Mediterranean Games which will be held southern Catalonia. So far, Spain has not yet confirmed whether it will issue visas for the participants in question or not, according to the Catalan broadcaster RAC1.

Earlier Spanish Ministry of Sport refused to grant visas for Kosovo delegation, despite the fact that IOC has recognised Kosovo Olympic Committee and the country has already attended Olympic Games in Rio and Winter Olympics in South Korea. Spain has not recognised Kosovo after its declaration of Independence in 2008. 26 countries are expected to attend Mediterranean Games in Tarragona.
