The Parliament of Macedonia has on Friday passed amendment to the constitution to rename the country Republic of North Macedonia.
Eighty-one MPs in the 120-seat parliament voted in favour of changing country’s name as agreed with Greece. Representatives of the opposition VMRO-DPMNE, who opposed the agreement with Greece, boycotted the vote. Macedonian prime Minister Zoran Zaev is expected to address the nation on Saturday.
While the Parliament was convened to vote constitutional amendments, outside the Parliament building thousands of citizens gather to protest against the decision to change country’s name.
