Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj talking to T7 television on Thursday expressed his convenience the 100 percent tax on Serbian goods will not be revoked despite request of his coalition partners and international.
Haradinaj admitted to T7 show Pressing hosted by Leonard Kerquki that that coalition partners asked him suspend the Tax in order to “maintain relations with the US” but reiterated that the tax will not be suspended. The US and EU called on Kosovo authorities to suspend the tax and resume the dialogue with Belgrade. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is conditioning continuation of EU-facilitated dialogue in Brussels with rescinding of tax which was imposed by Kosovo Government in November 2018. Haradinaj said that the request of coalition leaders will not lead towards break up of coalition and he is confident that he will conclude his four-year mandate as prime minister.
Asked to comment on what was discussed during an informal diner hosted by president Hashim Thaci which was attended by Kosovo institutional leaders and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, Haradinaj said that during the informal dinner Kosovo leaders including President Thaci, Speaker of Parliament Kadri Veseli, and Albanian PM Rama asked him to suspend the tax. He said Albanian PM asked him suspension of tax, noting however that he cannot pose any request to Kosovo and he can only express his personal opinions. “He [Rama] presented his opinion that the tax should be revoked,” Haradinaj told T7.
The Prime Minister also admitted that he was denied a US diplomatic visa because of resisting the US call to suspend the tax. He said that during a meeting with the US Ambassador to Kosovo, Philip Kosnett, they discussed an invitation he received to attend the annual event held in Washington – the Morning Prayers. “I was told that considering current climate it is unlikely for me to get a US visa because we share different opinions. I respect that,” Haradinaj said. “Respect for every US position, but our aim is to protect from an aggressor,” Haradinaj said.
The Prime Minister Haradinaj also criticised the director of Klan Kosova TV and journalist, Baton Haxhiu, who is promoting the idea proposed by Hashim Thaci on exchange of territories between Kosovo and Serbia. “I don’t understand Mr. Haxhiu’s mission explaining us benefits of this option. I don’t understand why he took this role,” Haradinaj stated.
