A new study suggests that thousands of people using weight loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may be experiencing side effects that have not previously been widely reported.
Researchers analyzed over 400 posts on online forums and discovered possible links between these drugs and symptoms such as menstrual cycle disorders, feelings of coldness, hot flashes, and fever-like symptoms.
This data comes directly from patients' experiences, suggesting a potential gap between the results of clinical studies and the reality of everyday use.
The research was conducted by scientists at the University of Pennsylvania, who analyzed discussions on the social network Reddit to identify lesser-known effects of these drugs, which are used both for weight loss and to treat diabetes.
Although the most common side effects – such as nausea and stomach problems – are well-known, the analysis suggests that hormonal changes and body temperature fluctuations may also be important and warrant further study.
About 4% of users in the analysis reported menstrual irregularities, including missed periods, heavy bleeding, or changes in cycle length. Meanwhile, many users reported fatigue, feeling cold, hot, or flu-like symptoms.
Experts point out that these drugs affect parts of the brain that regulate hormones, which could explain some of these symptoms, but warn that there is still no direct evidence linking these effects to the medications.
According to researchers, social networks are increasingly serving as an important source of information about patients' real experiences, revealing concerns that do not always appear in official medical reports.
However, they emphasize that these findings require further scientific verification, as data from social networks is not always representative of the entire population.
The use of these drugs has increased significantly in recent years, with millions of people using them for weight control, making it even more important to monitor their long-term effects. /GazetaExpress/
