Antibiotics are thought to have increased the average human lifespan by up to 23 years.

Of course, this does not mean that you should use them yourself, but only with the recommendation of a doctor.

Thanks to science, human life expectancy has increased significantly.

In the past, people did not have the medical care we have today and often died from diseases that are now treated with the simplest therapy.

Also, the death of newborns was very frequent due to the lack of adequate conditions for their care and treatment.

Even the wealthiest people in society, who at least had access to better medical care (and better food), didn't live very long.

For example, in the period 1200-1300, the average life expectancy of aristocrats was 64 years.

For "ordinary," poor people, the average age was much lower – around 35 years.

Today, the average life expectancy is 72 to 73 years, or 75 years for women and 70 years for men.

And, to a large extent, this is due to the progress of medicine.

So what medical discoveries have increased our lifespan?

Detection of bacteria and microorganisms

Today we all know what bacteria and microorganisms are and try to protect ourselves from them. But in the 19th century, before the existence of these microorganisms was proven, the situation was very different.

People did not wash their hands, nor bathe, nor sterilize surgical instruments, and thus all kinds of infections easily spread. It was not until 1861 that chemist Louis Pasteur proved that food was spoiled by bacteria invisible to the human eye and determined that diseases and infections were caused by them.

Anesthetics

Today, with the help of surgery, doctors save thousands of lives every day. But hardly anyone would agree to undergo surgery without anesthesia. Before anesthesia was discovered, many people chose death rather than undergo surgery, amputation, or repair of severely damaged teeth while they were conscious.

Fortunately, in 1846, dentist William TG Morton performed the first effective anesthesia. Anesthesia was first used on a patient who underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his neck. According to the patient, the surgery was painless.

Since then, medical experts have continued to perfect anesthesia, so today we can go to the dentist and have all kinds of surgeries done without worrying about pain.

Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is a surgery that is performed in the pelvis or abdomen and minimal incisions are made, usually with a diameter of 0,5 to 1,5 centimeters.

Since it is a very small incision, the recovery time is much shorter, the pain felt by patients is much less, and the risk of bleeding is significantly reduced. /Shqip.com
