The Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Hristijan Mickoski, has announced new measures to address the demographic crisis in the country.
He proposed the possibility of imposing additional taxes on unmarried people as part of efforts to boost the birth rate. In 2024, births in the country were only 16.061, while deaths reached 20.201, bringing a natural decline of over 4 people.
Mickoski said that in the last four years the country has lost more than 33 inhabitants. The birth rate has dropped significantly from 12,5% in 2010 to 8,8% in 2024. He added that in many areas there are no longer even first grades in schools.
The Prime Minister stressed the need to build institutions that preserve and develop youth potential. He called this challenge a problem that affects not only Macedonia, but the entire European continent.
