Political scientist Agon Maliqi has reacted through a Facebook status regarding recent political developments in Kosovo, criticizing the government's approach to institutional processes and the election of the president.
According to him, Prime Minister Albin Kurti "has very clear priorities", claiming that the time available for the election of the president is not being used to achieve political consensus.

"The entire month that the president has at his disposal to be elected [...] is being spent prioritizing securing control over independent institutions that are key to democracy," Maliqi wrote.

He mentions a number of institutions that, according to him, are currently in the process of selecting leaders, including the Constitutional Court of Kosovo, Radio Television of Kosovo and the Independent Media Commission.

"All of them are surprisingly in the process of selecting leaders from a majority otherwise characterized by laziness for serious work," he emphasizes.

According to Maliqi, the current institutional configuration – with a parliamentary majority and an acting president – allows the government to avoid consensus with the opposition.

"Kurti clearly had no interest in reaching a consensus with the opposition on the president," he writes.

He warns that control over these institutions could also affect future political processes.

"With these institutions soon under control, both the President and new elections will become less problematic," Maliqi estimates.

Finally, he compares this approach with popular political models in the region and beyond.

"A scenario seen and experienced throughout the Balkans and which will eventually end with the fate of Viktor Orbán," he concludes.
