Folksam, in its report "How Safe is the Car?", has listed the safest vehicles.
On the top list are several models from the company, Volvo, followed by Toyota and Mercedes.
Folksam's report also shows that the difference in safety is extremely large between the safest and least safe car models and that the risk of being seriously injured or killed in a traffic accident has been drastically reduced since from the 80s.
The report "How safe is the car" is based on the analysis of 184 thousand traffic accidents tested by Folksam, where 55 car models out of 383 received high results in terms of safety in accidents, but only seven of them meet Folksam's criteria.
According to Folksam's survey, the vast majority of drivers declared that the "Good Choice" award belongs to Volvo.
To achieve this, Volvo Cars ensures that safety systems such as automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection are standard in all its vehicles, while many competitors still only offer them as options.
The safest cars according to drivers:
Volvo S80/V70 10-16 (48 percent)
Toyota RAV4 15-18 (45 percent)
Mercedes E-class 15-16 (44 percent)
Volvo V40 12-19 (43 percent)
Volvo S60/V60 10-18 (42 percent)
Volvo S90/V90 16- (41 percent)
Volvo XC60 08-17 (41 percent).
Otherwise, newer cars generally have a much higher standard of safety. Therefore, a new car can be as safe or even safer than an old vehicle – but the differences between different makes and models are huge.
If we compare cars from 1981–90 with those from 2011–2020, the risk of personal injury is halved by 60-70 percent.
