Former senior NATO official Jamie Shea has stressed that the new Kosovo Government must take concrete steps to regain the trust of the United States and European partners, in order to accelerate the country's integration processes.
In a statement to Radio Free Europe, Shea said that the support of international allies is essential to ensure full international recognition of Kosovo, as well as its membership in important global organizations.
According to him, in exchange for Pristina's commitment to strengthening relations with strategic partners, the US and European countries should work more intensively to advance new recognitions and push forward Kosovo's membership in international organizations.
"Shea emphasizes that clear strategies and more effective international public diplomacy are needed to argue for membership in NATO and the European Union," the statement said.
On the domestic front, he recommended that the new Government offer the Serbian community a degree of local governance, in accordance with the Constitution of Kosovo, avoiding, as he put it, treating this community as a "fifth column".
"Enticement works better than coercion," Shea concluded, underlining the need for a more inclusive approach and trust-building in interethnic and international relations.
