A serious health situation on the MV Hondius cruise ship has sparked international alarm as American passengers have returned to the United States after a suspected hantavirus outbreak. The American passengers were reportedly evacuated and returned to the US on May 11 after the ship was involved in a health emergency that led to deaths and confirmed or suspected cases of infection. At least three people have died, while 11 others are being quarantined and under strict medical monitoring. After the ship docked in the Canary Islands, the passengers were transported by military and government aircraft, while medical teams in protective gear escorted them to land in Tenerife.
Authorities have decided that the patients will remain in isolation for 42 days, according to monitoring protocols for infectious diseases, while the medical structure in Nebraska is committed to following up on American cases. In this context, a popular theory has returned on social networks that links the event to the animated series The Simpsons, which for years has been the subject of discussions about "predictions" of real events.
According to these claims, the scenario of a viral outbreak on a cruise ship is not new to the series. Supporters of the theory recall that in a 2012 episode (Season 23, Episode 19), The Simpsons presented a very similar situation: a cruise ship where passengers face a biological emergency and a deadly virus that spreads rapidly, causing panic and quarantine.
In that episode, during an emergency broadcast, a military figure warns passengers about the spread of a virus and demands that the ship not be allowed to dock, while the situation is described as a global health crisis. Supporters of conspiracy theories point out that this scenario “predicted” in 2012 is eerily similar to the current events on the MV Hondius.
Fans of the series also recall that The Simpsons has previously "predicted" other global events, such as Donald Trump's presidency, the use of smartwatches, and video-calling technology, further strengthening the myth of its "predictions."
However, experts stress that these similarities are narrative coincidences of a satirical series that often uses exaggeration and futuristic scenarios, and not realistic predictions of world events. Health authorities are meanwhile continuing their investigations to determine the exact source of the outbreak and to ensure the safety of other passengers involved.
