On Swiss public transport, first class travel usually costs more than second class. But in some special cases, the opposite happens.
Recently, users of the SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) app have noticed an unusual situation: a "Saver Day" ticket for Ascension Day, May 14, was offered cheaper in first class than in second.
According to data published on the application, the price for first class was 114 francs, while for second class it was 119 francs.
How discount tickets work
Saver Day tickets can be purchased online or through the app and can offer up to 50% off. Prices change constantly based on demand, so travelers who plan ahead often get lower prices.
In this particular case, the higher demand for second-class tickets has caused their price to increase more than that of first-class.
According to public transport sector organization Alliance SwissPass, this can happen when demand for one category is higher than for another, leading to more variable prices in real time, albinfo.ch reports.
Temporary situation
Authorities emphasize that this type of imbalance usually lasts very short, as the market quickly adjusts when more travelers start buying first-class tickets.
In fact, in this case, discounted tickets for both classes were sold out within the same day, making the opportunity to save with first class only temporary.
