The crowd at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games went against IOC (International Olympic Committee) guidelines during the entrance of Team USA.
The 2026 Games will be the 25th edition of the Winter Olympics, with Mariah Carey performing at the opening ceremony on Friday at the San Siro.
Despite the Olympics uniting nations with diverse cultures from around the world, political tensions in the US have cast a shadow over preparations for this year's games.
Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala recently described Donald Trump's ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents as "a killing militia," following the murders of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.
Hundreds of protesters have gathered in Milan to oppose the US, however Donald Trump was not present in person; the US was represented by Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Before the ceremony, IOC president Kirsty Coventry was asked about Vance's participation and whether she expected "Team USA" to be booed during the games.
She replied: “I hope the opening ceremony is seen by everyone as an opportunity to show respect for each other.”
However, Coventry's hopes were immediately dashed during the opening ceremony, as Vance was loudly booed by the crowd when he appeared on screen as the American athletes took to the stage.
It's not just fans in the stadium and protesters in the streets who are reacting to the US; Team GB athlete Gus Kenworthy also made his stance clear on social media.
The freestyle skier posted a photo of the words "F*** ICE" written in urine in the snow, accompanied by a strong description.
Part of Kenworthy's message read: "Innocent people have been killed and enough is enough. We cannot stand by while ICE continues to operate with unchecked power in our communities."/Express newspaper/
