Bayern Munich meaningfully won the first edition of the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup, renamed after their legendary captain, by defeating VfB Stuttgart 2-1 at the MHPArena and taking their tally of Supercup trophies to 11 – a historic record.

Hosting the Super Cup for the first time, this did not necessarily turn out to be a positive aspect for Stuttgart, who ended the 2024/25 season losing seven of their last 10 matches at this stadium.

Although the stands had a more optimistic atmosphere, the home fans were forced to withstand early pressure from Bayern.

Leon Goretzka had two clear chances, but it was only a matter of time before Harry Kane scored against his favorite German "victim", taking advantage of a misplaced touch from Luca Jaquez and finishing accurately into the corner of the goal from 18 meters.

This goal, instead of discouraging the home team, fired them up even more, bombing the goal of an insurmountable Manuel Neuer.

The Bayern goalkeeper stopped shots from Deniz Undav, Josha Vagnoman and Nick Woltemade (linked to a possible move to Bayern), preserving the advantage until his team regained control. At the other end, Michael Olise headed over the bar just before the break.

The second half began with intensity and physicality, but little clarity in the game. Fabian Bredlow reacted well to stop Kane from doubling the lead, while Jamie Leweling forced Neuer into a spectacular save after a deflected shot, raising hopes for a dramatic final 15 minutes.

However, they were quickly extinguished as Bayern debutant Luis Díaz headed home Serge Gnabry's cross, sealing the win and extending Bayern's unbeaten run on home soil to 10 consecutive away games.

Stuttgart only found a consolation goal late on when Leweling headed home a Chema Andrés deflection. Despite losing to their fiercest local rivals, the German Cup (DFB-Pokal) winners remain optimistic about the start of the Bundesliga, especially with only Enzo Millot leaving the team this summer.

Meanwhile, Vincent Kompany adds another trophy to Bayern's cabinet since his arrival, bringing the Super Cup back to Bavaria for the first time since 2022. /GazetaExpress/
