A "classic car" is no longer just from the '60s and '70s; it now also includes models produced up to 2001.

Thousands of drivers in the UK could be paying more than they should for their vehicle insurance, without knowing that their car could be classified as a "classic".

Footman James, one of the UK's leading classic car insurance companies, warns that many drivers are unaware that their everyday car can fall into this category. Depending on the rarity, cultural significance, condition and use of the vehicle, you could save a significant amount of money.

Adam Summersby, commercial director of Footman James, says: “Many people think classic cars are only those from the 1960s or 1970s. But vehicles from the late 90s to 2001 are known for their design, heritage and cultural impact.”

He adds: “If your car is classed as a classic, you could be paying more for standard insurance. Talking to a specialist insurer can ensure the right cover and even save you hundreds of pounds.”

When can a car be considered a classic?

There is no single legal definition, but a car can be a classic if it meets one or more of the following criteria:

Age: manufactured in 2001 or earlier

Rarity: produced in small numbers

Cultural significance: represents an era or has historical/cultural impact

Maintenance: carefully maintained and restored

Usage: has done few kilometers, not daily use

Cars that meet these criteria are often considered more valuable and are given priority by experts. If your car is well-maintained and used sparingly, you may be in luck – and save a lot on insurance. /GazetaExpress/
