Some vitamins should be avoided before bed because they can ruin the quality of your sleep...

Although it's often recommended that nutritional supplements be taken in the evening, neurologist Alan Mandell warns that this is not always a good idea. He explained that there are some vitamins that should be avoided before bedtime, because they can ruin the quality of sleep. Lack of sleep affects concentration, increases stress levels, contributes to weight gain and causes other unpleasant symptoms. So, if we want to benefit from these vitamins without the risk of disrupting our sleep, Mandell recommends taking them earlier in the day, ideally in the morning.

“They give you energy, improve focus and, most importantly, help you stay healthy,” he concludes. Vitamin B-12 is essential for energy production and normal brain function, but Mandell advises against taking it in the evening. “B-12 can strongly stimulate the central nervous system and thus disrupt sleep,” he emphasizes. Since many use it for fatigue and problems with concentration, it makes sense that its effect is not desirable immediately before bedtime.

Known as the “sunshine vitamin,” vitamin D plays an important role in bone health and the immune system. However, the neurologist warns that it can negatively affect sleep because it inhibits the production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep rhythm. “Vitamin D can make it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep,” he explains. Although known for boosting immunity, taking vitamin C before bed may be unhealthy.

“Vitamin C can cause stomach upset, and if taken right before bed, it has a mild stimulant effect and makes it difficult to relax,” says Mandell. Vitamin E is often touted for its skin and hair benefits, but it can cause digestive upset if taken late in the evening. “Vitamin E can also cause stomach upset that can disrupt sleep at night,” Mandell points out.
