For millions of women facing one of the biggest changes in their lives—more or less understanding from their partners—this comes as no surprise.
But a new study clearly shows how little men understand menopause – including the fact that nearly one in four think you can fix a hot flash simply by opening a window.
Key findings from the study:
33% of men said they have little or no understanding of the symptoms their partner experiences during menopause.
40% were unable to even mention 'hot flashes' as a symptom.
57% had never heard of perimenopause, the stage that precedes menopause.
80% of men and women did not know that dry eyes are a common symptom.
66% of men admitted that they need to learn more about this topic.
1 in 3 couples said they rarely discuss menopause.
The study involved 2,000 adults and was commissioned by Vision Express, which is training its staff to recognise the impacts of menopause on women's eye health.
Comment from Vision Express:
"This study clearly shows the profound lack of knowledge about menopause and perimenopause. Women often face this difficult time without the support and information they deserve," said Dan McGhee, director of clinical services.
Women also have information gaps:
22% of women admitted that they don't know enough about perimenopause.
44% did not know that mood swings are a symptom.
57% were not aware of weight gain as an effect.
40% did not associate anxiety with menopause.
What is perimenopause?
Perimenopause is the stage before menopause, when hormones begin to change, but the menstrual cycle has not yet completely stopped.
It usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 60.
It can last from several months to several years.
During this time, the ovaries produce fewer eggs and estrogen levels drop.
When a woman has not had a period for 12 consecutive months, she is considered to have entered menopause.
Common symptoms:
🔸 Heat wave
🔸 Night sweats
🔸 Mood swings
🔸 Dry eyes
🔸 Anxiety, insomnia, weight gain
