If you rush through your house with your vacuum cleaner, chances are you're not cleaning properly.

Experts say that for a proper cleaning, you should spend at least 30 seconds per square meter of your home. This gives the vacuum cleaner enough time to suck up dust, dirt, and particles embedded deep in the carpet.

According to Katie Lilywhite, a floor care expert, the 30-second rule is no coincidence.

"Dust, hair, and microscopic particles don't just sit on the surface. They penetrate deep into the fibers of carpet and textured floors. Effective cleaning requires strong suction, brush motion, and, above all, surface contact time," she explains.

Moving the vacuum cleaner too quickly reduces contact time and makes it more difficult to remove heavy dirt or fine dust.

Experts advise paying special attention to high-traffic areas, such as hallways, entryways, and living rooms.

For best results, it is recommended to sweep slowly, with overlapping movements and in several directions. This helps to lift the carpet fibers and remove dirt more easily.

Lilywhite adds that using the right accessories is just as important. Most vacuum cleaners have extra attachments for corners, furniture, delicate surfaces, or tight areas, so they should be used as often as possible.

She also advises not to let the dust bag or container fill completely. Ideally, it should be emptied when it is half full, to avoid blockages and maintain suction power.

Even Dyson experts recommend cleaning in two directions. According to them, one pass in each direction gives the vacuum cleaner the best chance of cleaning well, while more than two or three passes in the same direction provide little additional improvement.

The vacuum cleaner filter should be washed about once a month to maintain maximum suction power, while the dust compartment should be cleaned regularly.

Experts also warn that some things should never be vacuumed. Ash and sawdust can clog filters, while glass shards can get stuck in the tube or motor.

Soil and plant debris are best cleaned with a hand broom and dustpan, because an electric vacuum cleaner can push them deeper into the carpet.

Also, liquids should not be sucked up with a vacuum cleaner, as they can cause an electrical hazard or fire. /GazetaExpress/
