Xi Jinping said the world risks returning to the "law of the jungle" and praised the China-Russia relationship as a global stabilizing force as he hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing on Wednesday, just days after hosting Donald Trump.

The Chinese leader welcomed the Russian president with grand ceremonies before their meeting began.

After the signing ceremony, Xi said that relations between Beijing and Moscow are at the "highest level of comprehensive strategic partnership," while calling for both countries to oppose "any unilateral provocation" in the international arena.

Xi’s remarks echoed his opening remarks, in which he said the world risks returning to “the law of the jungle.” He added that further escalation of conflicts in the Middle East is “inappropriate,” and that a “comprehensive ceasefire is urgent and essential,” state media reported.

Putin praised relations between the two countries as being at an “unprecedentedly high level,” noting that Moscow remains a “reliable energy supplier” amid the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. Putin also invited Xi to visit Russia next year.
