James Milner is close to breaking the Premier League record for most appearances, having made 652 appearances.

The Brighton midfielder/defender, 40, is just two games away from equalling Gareth Barry's record of 653 appearances.

With plenty of games left this season, barring any injury, it is almost certain that the former Liverpool player will break the record of his former teammate at Aston Villa and Manchester City.

In the last match, Milner was on the bench for Brighton's match against Everton.

His appearance off the bench in the 96th minute meant the three-time Premier League winner needed just one more appearance to equal Barry, and two appearances to take the record.

Considering Brighton's schedule - they play Crystal Palace on February 8 - the earliest date Milner could break the record is February 11 against Aston Villa, one of his previous clubs.

After Saturday's game, Brighton have 14 league games remaining this season, meaning Milner is in a good position to take top spot in the appearances table.

He currently ranks second, with Ryan Giggs (632 appearances) in third place.

Frank Lampard (609) and David James (572) complete the top five.

Then come Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer (544), Gary Speed (535), Emile Heskey (516), Jamie Carragher (508) and Phil Neville (505) completing the top-10.

This season, Milner has participated in 13 Premier League matches, scoring one goal and providing one assist.

He made his Premier League debut in November 2002, playing for Leeds against West Ham. At the time, aged 16 years and 309 days, he was the second-youngest player in Premier League history.

Milner has played for a total of six clubs, moving from Leeds, his hometown, to Newcastle, before playing for Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool and now Brighton./Express newspaper/
