Choosing a wedding dress can often be confusing. From black tie to smart casual, dress codes aren't always clear and mistakes are common.

According to Tracy Mudd, an expert at The Wedding Travel Company, one of the most common mistakes is interpreting the dress code literally without considering the wedding location — a problem that occurs especially among older guests.

"Those over 50 usually focus on elegant and comfortable clothing that suits the environment. Breathable materials, good fit, and practical shoes make a difference, especially for weddings abroad," she explains.

According to her, dress codes are only a guideline, while comfort is just as important to enjoying the day.

In warmer seasons, heavy materials and rigid cuts can quickly become uncomfortable, especially in humid climates. Shoes can also be a problem, especially outdoors or on cobblestone streets.

One simple rule remains unchanged: light colors are acceptable, but white should be avoided, unless the couple expressly allows it.

"Anything that could be confused with the bride's dress or the couple's clothing should be avoided," the expert emphasizes.

Below are explained the most common dress codes and how they should be interpreted.

Black tie (very formal)

This is the most formal dress code, requiring floor-length dresses and elegant suits. Bold colors, luxurious details, and a “red carpet” look are welcome.

However, anything too overt or heavy should be avoided.

"It's often a mistake to choose heavy clothing, especially for weddings abroad. Light, airy materials work best without losing the formality," says Mudd.

Formal

This usually includes long or midi dresses, or regular suits.

The challenge is to maintain elegance without losing comfort, especially on long days or hot weather.

This category allows for experimentation with shapes: plunging necklines and open backs may be appropriate in luxury restaurants or hotels, while religious settings require a more modest style.

Cocktail

A little more relaxed than formal, but still neat and festive.

The biggest mistake is to dress too simply.

Shorter dresses, lighter materials, and decorative details are acceptable. If you're looking to get ready for an elegant evening, you're on the right track.

semi-formal

It is often used for civil ceremonies or just a reception after the wedding.

This code can create confusion because it is more flexible.

Everyday clothing such as very plain linen or informal combinations should be avoided. The best choices are simple dresses or modern, yet event-appropriate, outfits.

smart-casual

One of the most misunderstood codes.

Many people interpret it as "very simple", but this is wrong.

Jeans and sportswear are not appropriate. Better are regular summer dresses or simple but elegant combinations, accompanied by regular shoes — not sneakers. /GazetaExpress/
