The phrase "eating like a king" often brings to mind luxurious banquets and packed tables, but King Charles' diet is much simpler and traditional, based on natural foods, routine, and seasonality.

Now 77, Charles became monarch in 2022 and comes from a family of extraordinary longevity. This has often raised the question of whether his diet plays a role in his health and energy. The king's former personal butler, Grant Harrold, has described his eating habits, while nutritionist Rob Hobson has provided the expert assessment.

Strict eating routine

According to Harrold, King Charles never skips breakfast, often skips lunch and dines late, around 21–22 p.m., mostly due to official engagements. According to experts, this means that the quality of breakfast and dinner becomes even more important, as food is concentrated in a few meals.

Nutritionist Hobson emphasizes that eating late at night is not ideal for digestion and sleep, but adds that it is not an absolute rule - the quality of the diet and lifestyle remain crucial.

A simple but rich breakfast

At his residence at Highgrove, the king's breakfast is simple but very nutritious. It includes fresh bread, cereals, muesli, seasonal fruit and vegetables, eggs and often asparagus - much of it grown in the estate's gardens. When he travels, he takes a "breakfast box" with his favourite foods.

Instead of coffee, the king prefers Darjeeling tea with milk. One of his usual breakfast meals is eggs, boiled or baked, often combined with asparagus. Eggs are a good source of protein, vitamins B and D, as well as easily absorbable vitamin A.

Asparagus, in addition to being rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals, supports gut health and helps reduce inflammation - an increasingly important element in modern diets.

Traditional and seasonal dinner

Dinner is the main meal of the day. His former chef has revealed that the king enjoys wild mushrooms, picked by himself, and traditional dishes such as mushroom risotto, accompanied by lamb or other organic meat from the farm.

Although red meat is an important source of protein, iron and vitamin B12 – essential for the nervous system and healthy aging – King Charles has been known to consume it in moderation. Even before his recent health problems, he tried to have several meat-free days a week, mainly for environmental reasons.

He eats according to the season and uses produce from his own garden: potatoes, leeks, asparagus and other vegetables. According to nutritionists, this approach based on raw and local foods is very positive for health.

What to avoid and what to drink

King Charles usually avoids seafood, due to fears of food poisoning that could hinder his official duties. This means he may be getting less iodine and omega-3s, but these can easily be supplemented from other sources.

As for drinks, he drinks more tea than coffee – about four cups a day. When he does drink coffee, he prefers instant and sweetens it with honey. Nutritionally, honey and sugar are similar, but tea offers additional benefits thanks to its antioxidants.

He also enjoys an occasional glass of wine, especially on formal occasions. Experts emphasize that moderate, social alcohol consumption is different from daily use, which is associated with serious health risks.

According to nutritionist Rob Hobson, King Charles' diet is, overall, nutritionally sound. It is traditional, rich in whole, seasonal and minimally processed foods, and shaped as much by routine and circumstance as by the principles of healthy eating. /GazetaExpress/
