President Vjosa Osmani has asked the Kosovo Assembly to amend the Constitution so that the country's president is directly elected by the people.
The amendments were drafted by the Constitutional Amendment Commission in 2011.

The first point of the amendment provides for the direct election of the president by citizens with the right to vote.
The second point provides that presidential elections are announced by the Speaker of the Assembly.
"No later than six months before the end of the regular mandate of the President of the Republic of Kosovo" - these amendments proposed in 2011 for the announcement of the elected.
According to these proposed amendments, any citizen who meets the conditions set out in the Constitution could be a candidate for president.
The candidate, according to the amendments, could be proposed by political entities that have passed the electoral threshold in the last elections; by entities that hold guaranteed seats in the Assembly and through a petition submitted to the CEC with the signatures of at least 15 qualified voters in Kosovo.
"A parliamentary political entity may nominate only one candidate. The nomination process shall be carried out according to the deadlines and procedures established by law," the proposed amendment further states.
The last point for amending Article 86 stated that if a presidential candidate receives over 50% of the votes, he or she is elected president of the Republic of Kosovo.
If no candidate receives an absolute majority, a second round was planned between the two candidates with the most votes in the first round.
It was envisaged that the second round of elections would be held no later than 30 days after the first round and the candidate who receives the majority of votes in the second round would be elected president.
