Four industries, tobacco, alcohol, ultra-processed foods and fossil fuels, are responsible for 2.7 million deaths in the European Region each year.
This conclusion has been reached by experts from the World Health Organization, after studying morbidity and fatalities in the population. The new WHO report highlights how these large industries promote chronic diseases, hindering health policies and targeting vulnerable people.
They shed light on the wide range of tactics that industries use to maximize profits and undermine public health. These practices fuel inequality and the rates of cancer, cardiovascular and chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes, and create a major obstacle to preventive policies.
Experts say these “Four industries kill at least 7000 people in the European region every day. The same large commercial entities block regulations that would protect the public from their products and marketing. The report contains a series of case studies that illustrate the breadth and depth of corporate capture of public policy and policy-making, affecting all areas of people’s lives.
