United States President Donald Trump declared that Washington will not allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons under any circumstances, while confirming the launch of a naval blockade of Iranian ports by the US Navy.
Speaking from Andrews military base in Maryland, Trump stressed that "Iran will not have a nuclear weapon," adding that Tehran "continues to pursue that objective."
Asked about the possibility of resuming negotiations, he said that this was not a priority for him. "I don't care if they come back to the talks or not. If they don't come back, I'm fine," he declared, also claiming that Iran's military capabilities have been significantly weakened.
Meanwhile, the US military announced that a blockade of Iranian ports will take effect from this afternoon, following the failure of direct talks between the two countries. The measure foresees the ban on ships of all nationalities entering or leaving Iranian ports, including those in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
However, US authorities clarified that navigation in the strategic Strait of Hormuz will be allowed for ships not related to Iran, aiming to avoid a total disruption of global energy supplies.
