Three suspected hantavirus patients have just been evacuated from the Hondius ship and are heading to the Netherlands for medical care, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) says.
Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus says the organization continues to work with the ship's operator, in addition to the governments of Cape Verde, the United Kingdom, Spain and the Netherlands.
"WHO thanks everyone involved. At this stage, the overall risk to public health remains low," he added in a statement on X.
Aboard the MV Hondius, which departed from Argentina on April 1, there is an outbreak of hantavirus spread by rodents on board.
The ship was due to arrive in the Canary Islands within the next few days – but Fernando Clavijo says: "I can't let [the ship] in."
A number of passengers have been infected and three have died.
