Vance: Ball is in Tehran's court after 'progress' in talks

United States Vice President JD Vance said the ball is now in Iran's court after peace talks last weekend in Islamabad marked "a lot of progress."

Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Vance said that during the peace talks, which lasted about 20 hours, "we, in fact, made it very clear what our red lines were."

"I really think the ball is in Iran's court, because we've put a lot on the table," Vance said.

He added that during the talks it became clear that US President Donald Trump has no flexibility regarding Iran's enriched uranium, which Washington should have, and the verification mechanism that would ensure that Tehran does not develop nuclear weapons in the future.

"It's one thing for the Iranians to say they won't have nuclear weapons, it's another thing for us to put in place the mechanism to ensure that doesn't happen," Vance said.

Vance also accused the Iranian government of engaging in an "act of economic terrorism" by blocking traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

If the Iranians "engage in economic terrorism," the US will adhere to the principle that "no Iranian ships will leave."

From April 13, the US began implementing a naval blockade on ships entering Iran's ports and coastal areas, after last week's peace talks failed to produce concrete results.

Ships using the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports will not be impeded, the US military said.

This move is seen as President Trump's latest attempt to force Iran to make concessions.

The two countries and Israel, as of April 9, are in a two-week ceasefire, after nearly six weeks of fighting. /REL/
