Chrome users are being warned to restart the browser and make sure they are using the latest updated version of the program.
An urgent warning has been issued to all users of this browser. If you have it installed on your computer, it is recommended that you restart it and update it as soon as possible. Google has confirmed the release of an update that fixes a total of 21 security vulnerabilities in this widely used application. Moreover, one of these vulnerabilities – identified as CVE-2026-5281 – has been classified as a “zero-day”.
For those unfamiliar with tech terminology, a “zero-day” threat means that the vulnerability has already been discovered by hackers and is being actively exploited to attack Chrome users.
"Google is aware that there is an active exploit for CVE-2026-5281 in circulation," the company confirmed on its Chrome security pages.
Further details about the nature of the attack or the users affected have not yet been made public; it is only known that the problem was identified and reported to Google last month.
Providing more information, Google added:
“This update includes 21 security fixes. Access to details of the issues may be restricted until the majority of users have installed the update. Such restrictions may also remain in cases where the vulnerability is located in third-party libraries that have not yet been updated.”
Every Chrome user should now make sure they are using the latest version to protect their device and data.
"The stable version has been updated to 146.0.7680.177/178 for Windows and Mac, and 146.0.7680.177 for Linux, and will be gradually released in the coming days and weeks," Google confirmed.
To check the installed version, open the Chrome menu, select "About Chrome" and a window with relevant information will appear.
If a notification appears requesting a browser restart, it means you are not using the latest version and you should update it immediately.
