Today, US senators, Democrat Jeanne Shaheen, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Republican Thom Tillis, co-chairs of the Senate NATO Observer Group, issued a joint response regarding US President Donald Trump's statements on the US withdrawal from NATO.

The response states that NATO is the strongest and most successful military Alliance in history and as such promotes economic stability and protects important US trade relations.

"NATO is the strongest and most successful military alliance in history. It promotes economic stability and protects our most important trading relationships. It is an important force multiplier in an increasingly dangerous world. Our Allies, year after year, have made determined efforts to confront growing threats and have agreed to spend five percent of GDP on defense to strengthen burden-sharing. Our citizens know that NATO makes Americans safer and more prosperous, which is why NATO's favorability is consistently above 60 percent among the American public," the response states.

The senators further say that NATO stood by America and came to the aid of the US after the September 11 attacks.

"Their soldiers fought and died alongside our troops in Afghanistan," the response said.

According to the senators, any President who considers trying to withdraw from NATO is not only fulfilling the wildest dreams of Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, but would also undermine America's own national security interests.

“Let’s be clear, Congress will not allow the United States to withdraw from NATO. A bipartisan bill authored by then-Senator Rubio, which was signed into law, prevents any President from doing so unilaterally. Instead, the law clearly states that only Congress can authorize the President to withdraw the United States from NATO. This will not happen. Congress and the American people know that we are stronger when we stand with our allies. This is a fundamental fact, and one that we ignore only to our detriment,” the response concludes.
