One of the panels of the Bled Strategic Forum, the US Ambassador to NATO, Matthew G. Whitaker, stated that the United States is carefully following developments in Serbia and the entity of Republika Srpska (RS), emphasizing that the main priority is preventing any scenario that could escalate into a regional conflict.
"We are monitoring very closely everything that is happening both in Republika Srpska and in Serbia. We are currently focused on ensuring that the situation does not escalate into a potential regional conflict," Whitaker said, reports Klix.ba
He emphasized that maintaining stability in the Western Balkans remains an important goal, not only for the United States, but also for European allies within NATO, who have an obligation to act together in times of crisis.
The US ambassador also added that NATO is prepared to provide both security forces and political pressure to guarantee peace and stability in the region.
Asked about the possibility of a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić or the leader of Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, Whitaker responded that there is currently no announcement of such a meeting.
"If such a meeting were to occur, it would be aimed at advancing peace and stability – not strengthening the political position of any leader. President Trump does not do that," the ambassador said.
He described Trump as a "dealer and peacemaker," focused on results and creating opportunities for progress.
"If there is an opportunity to advance American values and interests – then a meeting could happen. But I am not here to announce any meeting with the leaders of Serbia or Republika Srpska," Whitaker concluded.
