The United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution condemning Iran's attacks on Gulf countries and Jordan and demanding their immediate cessation.
No country voted against.
After the vote, Iran's UN Ambassador Amir-Saeid Iravani addressed the Council and expressed "deep regret" over the adoption of the resolution. "This is a day of deep regret, both for the Security Council and for the international community. Today's adoption is a serious blow to the credibility of the Council and leaves a permanent stain," Iravani said.
"Today's act represents a blatant abuse of the Security Council's mandate," he said, sharply criticizing the United States for waging a "barbaric war against the Iranian people" and inciting conflict, including the assassination of Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.
"This resolution is a blatant injustice to my country, which is the main victim of a clear act of aggression. It distorts the reality on the ground and deliberately ignores the root causes of the current crisis," Iravani said, accusing the US and Israel of being behind the resolution.
The positions of Russia and China
Addressing the Council, Russian Ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, said his country abstained from voting on the draft resolution "because it was extremely unbalanced" and would not serve the purpose of "achieving international peace and security."
"We regret the situation in which the countries of the Middle East have found themselves. Moreover, we consider attacks on the civilian infrastructure of Arab states in the Persian Gulf unacceptable," Nebenzia said.
China's UN Ambassador Zhang Jun told the Council that the conflict "has neither legitimacy nor legal basis" and that the US and Israel must stop their attacks to prevent further deterioration of the situation in the region.
The UN Security Council also voted on a draft resolution proposed by Moscow on Wednesday, calling on all parties to cease military action in the Middle East, but the proposal was not adopted.
