Two National Guard members were shot in Washington on Wednesday near the White House.

President Donald Trump was not at the White House when the incident occurred, as he is in Florida.

Trump said the two National Guard members were "seriously injured" and that the shooter was also "seriously injured."

"The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen - both seriously injured and now in two different hospitals - is also seriously injured, but will pay dearly for it," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

Interior Secretary Kristi Noem said in a post on social media that two Guard members had been shot and that her department was working with local police to gather more details.

Police in Washington said a suspect has been arrested and taken into custody after a shooting a block from the White House and that the area has been secured.

"The president has been notified," said White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt.

Trump is at his Palm Beach resort ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday.

US Vice President JD Vance is in Kentucky. /REL
